Experiment 21-The Indicator Experiment

                                                                 Experiment 21

AIM

To create an indicator that can be used to test the acidity or basicity of different substances.
.

APPARATUS AND MATERIAL REQUIRED

  • Red cabbage
  • Blender
  • Cheesecloth
  • Distilled water
  • Acids and bases (vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, ammonia)

INDICATOR

OBJECTIVES:

  • To learn how to extract the anthocyanins from red cabbage.
  • To create an indicator from the anthocyanins.
  • To test the acidity or basicity of different substances using the indicator.

RESULTS:

1. The anthocyanins in red cabbage can be extracted by blending the cabbage with distilled water.
2. The extracted anthocyanins can be used to create an indicator that changes color depending on the pH of the solution it is dipped in.
3. The indicator turns red in acidic solutions and blue in basic solutions.

CONCLUSION:

This experiment showed that it is possible to create an indicator from the anthocyanins in red cabbage. This indicator can be used to test the acidity or basicity of different substances.
