Experiment 2- The Elephant Toothpaste Experiment

                                                            Experiment 2

AIMTo

This experiment is a fun and easy way to demonstrate the power of chemical reactions.

APPARATUS AND MATERIAL REQUIRED

  • 1 2-liter bottle
  • 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tablespoon of dish soap
  • 10 drops of food coloring (optional)
  • 1 balloon

INSTRUCTION:

  1. Fill the bottle halfway with hydrogen peroxide.
  2. Add the dish soap and food coloring (if desired).

3.Stretch the balloon over the opening of the bottle.
4. Carefully stand the bottle on a flat surface.
5. Wait a few minutes and watch the magic happen!

OBSERVATIONS:

The balloon will start to inflate as the hydrogen peroxide and dish soap react. The food coloring will add a fun touch to the experiment.

WHAT
HAPPENING:

The hydrogen peroxide is a weak acid. The dish soap is a surfactant, which means it lowers the surface tension of water. When the hydrogen peroxide and dish soap mix, they create a lot of foam. The foam is so dense that it can't escape the bottle, so it inflates the balloon.

CONCLUSION:

This experiment is a great way to learn about chemical reactions and the properties of acids and bases. It's also a lot of fun!
